on a given box, it is easy to check whether USB (or anything else,
for that matter) uses an SMI. In Fusion configuration enable the options
"SMI workaround", and "Globally disable SMI", launch latency, and check
whether your USB devices are still working.

If they no longer work, then they need SMIs, and they could induce high
latencies, if they still work, then they do not need SMIs, and you can
safely use USB.
